Fairtrade Fortnight Awards 2008

Little did a Louth Oxfam shop volunteer realise, on a bright February morning when she set off on a tour round Lincolnshire, armed with her new bus pass and a huge inflatable Fairtrade banana, that her trip would win national recognition. On Saturday 4 October Gill Chatfield received the award of Runner Up in the 'Most imaginative campaign' category of the Fairtrade Fortnight Awards 2008, on behalf of the Louth Fairtrade Town group. Harriet Lamb CBE, executive director of the Fairtrade Foundation, presented the awards at the Foundation's Campaign Day in Sheffield.

Gill had spent the day listening to talks and attending workshops about Fair Trade issues. She said ' the highlight of the day was a video conference with a cocoa grower from the Kuapa Kokoo Co-operative in Ghana. He told us what a difference the Fairtrade premium made to his village, although only 10% of his crop is sold through Fairtrade. In future he hoped that the premium would help fund more education for girls. His final message was "eat more Fairtrade chocolate" - something I can heartily endorse. Not only does it taste delicious, it makes such a difference to the lives of the people who produce the raw material'.

As usual when there is an award ceremony there are people to thank, including managers and volunteers at Oxfam shops throughout the county, and the bus drivers who enabled Gill to complete her journey. However, particular thanks go to Louise Rowley, who was manager at the Louth Oxfam shop, and Coun. Leslie Koumi. Louise happened to mention that there was an inflatable Fairtrade banana in town, and wouldn't it be a good idea to take it on the bus. Leslie, and Louth Wholefood Co-op, provided the banana, and in her capacity as councillor, ensured that the bus pass was available for the 7.30 am start from Louth.
